Multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter (and co-founder of Elephant’s Ear Music), Patrick Jered is based in Amsterdam, Holland. He is rather camera-shy and steers away from publicity in general.
After many years of making electronic ‘tape recorder’ music for his own amusement, Patrick discovered Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, and finally realised that all he really wanted was to write good songs that touched people. He tested out his song writing by releasing a 5-track EP entitled ‘Prozac Poetry’. Spurred on by good reactions, he released a full-length CD called ‘The Idle Singer of an Empty Day’ (under a different artist’s name) on the now defunct indie label TrebleYoo. ‘Idle Singer’ was essentially just guitar and voice, and was recorded with the simplest equipment on a single rainy afternoon in Amsterdam. Those were the days of lo-fi! It was technically flawed, but it captured something that captured people, and picked up some good reviews along the way. The CD established a small, but intensely loyal following around the world. Patrick doesn’t want Elephant’s Ear Music re-release it, but it pops up around the world on e-bay now and then...if you’re interested.
In Autumn 2006, Patrick set about recording what was to become the CD ‘Tykhana’. Inspired by trips to India and the Middle East, he felt that the simplicity of his guitar/voice recordings could be augmented by some eastern shading, coupled with minimal electronics and the odd scatchy, trippy beat.
Tykhana is the first release of Elephant’s Ear Music. While remaining essentially acoustic and quite minimalist, it fuses instruments as diverse as Mellotron, Turkish Cümbüs, electric mandolin, and kemanche, to create a starkly unique setting for the songs. All instruments were played by Patrick and the whole CD was recorded, produced, and mastered by him in his home studio.
Patrick Jered is currently re-recording some of his earlier material for release by Elephant’s Ear Music, and writing new songs for a future project. He occasionally does off-beat gigs around Amsterdam, and may stray further soon...
