Tykhana is the first release on the new label Elephant’s Ear, a label that is interested in unusual ‘difficult-to-place’ music. A noble aim for which, in the case of Jered, they hit a bulls eye. Just as on his previous album (brought out under the name Pat Crowley) the basis is the acoustic singer-songwriter genre, but in contrast to that album the instrumentation has gone a step further making atmospheric use of diverse string instruments and keyboard sounds. The strongest point is the songs themselves which, in terms of atmosphere and emotion, call up comparisons with Nick Drake. Just as by that tormented genius, at no point does it matter that Jered is no great singer, but rather he manages to turn that to his advantage. Despite the Indian title, and world-oriented themes and instrumentation, this CD was simply put together in an apartment in Amsterdam, an extremely admirable effort from this DIY musician.

Tykhana is de eerste release op het nieuwe label Elephant’s Ear, een label met het oog op eigenzinnige en niet-te-plaatsen muziek. Een nobel streven, waarmee ze in het geval van Jered gelijk raak schieten. Net als vorig werk van hem (ook uitgebracht onder de naam Pat Crowley) is de basis het akoestische singer-songwriter genre, maar in tegenstelling tot dat werk gaat de instrumentatie nu een stuk verder en maakt hij sfeervol gebruik van diverse snaarinstrumenten en keyboardvariaties. Sterkste punt zijn echter de composities zelf, die qua sfeer en emotie herinneringen oproepen aan Nick Drake. Net als bij dat getormenteerde genie is het geen enkel moment een probleem dat Jered bepaald geen groot zanger is, maar weet hij die beperking voor zich te laten werken. Ondanks de Indiase titel, en de internationaal georiënteerde thema’s en instrumentatie, is deze CD gewoon in een Amsterdams appartementje in elkaar gezet en bewijst deze dat doe-het-zelven een zeer lovenswaardige bezigheid is.
