In the days of the four-track tape recorder we called it lo-fi, mainly due to the questionable sound quality. The times have changed, and nowadays anybody can buy equipment of a quality that pretty much approaches the average studio. And there are still people, perhaps increasingly so, who tinker about in their attic rooms with recording gear. The Amsterdam singer-songwriter Patrick Jered is one of them. Luckily he managed to find a record label that didn’t drag him to a studio, but simply put his raw recordings onto a CD. Because, although the voice is not always exactly in tune, the overall effect of beautifully reserved songs, fine guitar playing, arrangements packed with eastern instruments, and occasionally a strange sample, would simply have lost power by that approach. The eastern connection is not only reflected in the instrumentation, but also the artwork and texts. Almost apologetically in the biography he states that he only performs sporadically, is certainly not a natural performer, and doesn’t even like to be photographed. I personally would see this as an advantage. Because how irritating did Spinvis become when he was suddenly pushed onto the big stages? As long as Jered keeps producing his jewels of songs from such an intimate perspective, he will have at least one fan.

De tijd van de vier-sporencasetterecorders noemden we het lo-fi, met name vanwege het twijfelachtig geluidskwaliteit. De tijden zijn verandered, tegenwoordig kan iedereen zichzelf apparatuur aanschaffen die de kwaliteit van een doorsnee-studio redelijk kan benaderen. En dus wordt er nog steeds, en misschien in toenemende mate, geknutseld op zolderkamers. De Amsterdamse singer-songwriter patrick Jeredis zo’n knutselaar. Gelukkig heeft hij een label gevonden die hem niet naar een gelikte studio heeft gesleept, maar gewoon die ruwe opnamen op een cd heeft gezet. Want hoewel de zang niet altijd even zuiver is, het geheel van prachtig ingetogen liedjes, fraai guitarwerk en arrangementen gevuld met oosterse instrumenten, en af entoe een raar sample, zou daarvan alleen mar aan kracht inboeten. De oosterse connectie komt trouwens niet alleen terug in de instrumentatie, maar ook in het artwork en de teksten. Enigzins verontschuldigend staat in de biografie dat hij slechts af en toe optreed, geen podiumbeest is en zelfs niet graag gefotografeerd wordt. Ik zou dit eerder als een voordeel zien, want hoe vervelend is spinvis gewoorden toen hij ineens op de grote podia neergeplant werd? Zolang Jered zijn ingetogen pareltjes vooral blijft vertolken in en vanuit een intieme omgeving, heeft hij tenminste één fan.
