Patrick Jered - Tykhana
The sleeve notes and press release for this CD describe the Amsterdam singer-songwriter Patrick Jered as a kind of recluse. This image is confirmed by the material on Tykhana: this is intimate music, which Jered pretty much recorded alone in his living room. Jered spent years playing with electronics but at a certain point came under the influence of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, and then he just wanted to make ‘good songs that touched people’. There are certainly a few of those on Tykhana: the opening number The Scented Garden of Byzantium is of an unearthly beauty, and he hits that ‘Nick Drake’ level another couple of times. Jered shades his introspective, essentially acoustic songs with atmospheric keyboards, samples, and his penchant for exotic instruments. An entire CD as a guest in Jered’s living room is perhaps a bit too much of a good thing. The big challenge for Jered, as he builds upon his unmistakable talent, will be to expand the variation without damaging the intimacy that is his trademark.

Patrick Jered Tykhana
De linernotes en persmateriaal van deze CD beschrijft de Amsterdamse Patrick Jered als een soort kluizenaar. Dat beeld woordt door het materiaal op Tykhana bevestigd: dit is intieme muziek, die Jered vrijwel in z’n eentje in zijn eigen huiskamer opnam. Jered hield zich jarenlang bezig met electronica maar raakte op een zekere moment in de ban van Joni Mitchell en Leonard Cohen, waarna hij op zoek ging naar ‘good songs that touched people’. Daarvan staan er beslist een paar op Tykhana: opener The Scented Garden of Byzantium is van een onaardse schoonheid, en aan dat Nick Drake-achtig niveau raakt hij nog een paar keer meer. Jered kleurt zijn introspective, op akoestische thema’s gebaseerde songs sfeervol in met toetsen, samples en een keur aan exotische instrumenten. Hij beschrijft zijn eigen stem als een ‘slightly flat drone’ en is daarmee acurater dan hij zelf waarschijnlijk hoopte. Een heele cd lang te gast in Jereds huiskamer is dan ook wat veel van het goede. De grote uitdaging voor Patrick bij het uitbouwen van zijn onmiskenbare talent is het vergroten van de afwisseling, zonder dat dit ten koste gaat van de intimiteit die zijn handelsmerk voormt.
